Plans to rescue the Soweto Marathon have been put on hold
The Soweto Marathon which was scheduled to take place on the 3rd of November next month has been suspended. After two weeks of grueling deliberations and fundraising efforts by the newly formed interim committee, a difficult decision was reached to abort this year’s Soweto Marathon. The committee was set up by the Gauteng department of Sports Arts Culture and Recreation MEC Lebogang Maile, after it emerged that the iconic race has been cancelled due to lack of co-operation from former organizers ASA to secure funding for the event. This committee is a  joint venture between the Gauteng Government, the City of Johannesburg, Central Gauteng Athletics, Gauteng Sport Council & Soweto Sport Council.

Mitigating factors for the cancellation.
 ·         During the two week period, the committee has been able to raise about 80% of the requisite budget, but there is a R 1 million shortfall.

·         Time constrains, the organizers have warned that it will be impossible to prepare for a race of this magnitude in the next two weeks.

Gauteng department of Sports Arts Culture and Recreation MEC Lebogang Maile says the team worked around the clock to raise funds in order to rescue the Soweto marathon, but in the end the committee had to face the hard facts presented by this unfortunate situation. “ It a sad day for sports in Gauteng, the only South African premier race that takes place in the Township is facing serious challenges. As the provincial government we want to support the organizers in preparing for next year’s marathon, so that they are able to present a world class event at the time when the country in celebrating 20 years of our democracy” says MEC Maile.
